Halloween is this Thursday and I have yet to buy any Halloween candy for trick-or-treaters. (Insert Halloween scream here or the famous dun-dun-dun sound).
Well here’s the truth: I don’t want to buy a big bag of candy because we don’t get very many trick-or-treaters. A huge bag will just end up being a trail of candy wrappers next week.
My first thought was that I’d just buy regular size candy bars. I would be the best house on the block for the kids and I’d have no leftover candy. But with the childhood obesity epidemic, and being a health educator myself, probably not the best idea I’ve had.
I’ve seen a few blogs suggesting that you buy candy you don’t like. For me that would be the Almond Joys or those little sixlets. Better idea; but still not healthy.
I’ve also seen blogs suggest toothbrushes and floss. While my dentist would like that, I just can’t get myself to do this.
And finally it hit me. Why not buy fun Halloween pencils, spider rings, glasses with silly noses, etc.? The kids will surely love these items!
So later today I am off to the store to pick out some of these healthy alternatives. What will you be passing out this year on Halloween? Share your healthy ideas below in the comments!
